Do I need a

Tree Surgeon, an Arborist or

an Arboriculturalist?

A frequently asked question in the field of tree care is what is the difference between a tree surgeon, an arborist and an arboriculturalist? While the terms are often used interchangeably, there are distinctions, read on to find out:

According to the Arboricultural Association, a tree surgeon and an arborist are the same!  You can read their definition here

https://www.trees.org.uk/Help-Advice/Public/Choosing-your-Arborist-Tree-Surgeon

Tree surgeons (arborists) specialise in tree surgery, the practical aspect of tree care, such as pruning, tree removal, and maintenance procedures.  A tree surgeon knows how to perform the maintenance to the tree, for example, where the cut should be made, how much can be taken from the tree etc.

On the other hand, an Arboriculturalist is also referred to as a Tree Consultant or a Tree Advisor and is a professional who focuses on the overall health and maintenance of trees, including planting, diagnosing diseases, and providing tree care recommendations.  They have a more in-depth knowledge of tree biology and can diagnose and recommend how to treat tree diseases and disorders. An arboriculturalist is able to assess, understand and advise on the reason why the tree needs a specific type of tree surgery.  We will now refer to arboriculturalists as "Tree Consultants" as it's much less of a mouthful!

Tree consultants provide specialist opinion on tree health, safety and preservation and can advise and find solutions where trees grow near buildings and structures, or if they need to be considered for development planning and other areas of law. Our tree consultants work nationwide providing tree advice and solutions for the most complex of projects.

Our qualified tree surgeons, arborists and arboriculturalists (tree consultants) have knowledge of both professions but hold relevant qualifications in their own field of expertise.  This means here at Arbor Division we can advise on your tree query and carry out the remedial work, ensuring the  smooth delivery of your project.

The Telling Life of Trees

with Kate Hampshire

Kate Hampshire is a Professor of Anthropology at Durham University. Most of her research over the last 25 years has been on healthcare in Africa, but she recently began a new project on chainsaw operators in northern England, bringing insights from her previous work on practices of care and temporalities to understanding the relationships between people, machines and trees that emerge in the act of cutting living wood.

Kate already possesses tickets in chainsaw maintenance and cross-cutting, small & medium tree felling and climbing, along with Forestry First Aid +F.  She found our details from the Arboricultural Association (www.trees.org.uk) and got in touch to arrange working alongside an Arb Approved Contractor on a voluntary basis to learn more about arboriculture and the opportunity to get more practical experience in tree work.

As well as working alongside chainsaw operators, foresters and arborists who cut trees for a living in the North East of England, Kate recently recorded an interview for Durham Book Festival where she explores the concepts of time which are deeply interwoven in the life of trees and the practice of tree surgery. Reflecting on her hands-on research in the field (or in this case, woodland), Kate asks how we might hold the future in the face of existential uncertainty about our species and our planet.
